Rome...Rome...here I come! I am leaving tomorrow at the crack off dawn to embrace another part of the world that is in need of meeting me.
To answer some questions:
1. My job is very stressful and I have tried not to talk about it too much on this blog. Certain things that happen at work have a way of emotionally spilling over elsewhere. Isn't that always the case working in social services. I do enjoy my job, however it is not something that I could do long-term. I am gaining an overwhelming amount of experience that I would not trade for anything in the world. I currently work on a team that is comprised of Brits, Americans and South Africans. Our clients come from 1 of 3 geographic locations in the town. The social problems that we have to deal with at home are the same here, difference being is the way in which the govt. attempts to alleviate the problems. It is well known that govts. do not focus on the systemic social problems, but deal with the outcome of the social problem that is a part of vicious cycle.
My job encompasses a little bit of everything. I do home visits/initial assessments when a child abuse referral comes in, I have been to court fighting for my newborn to remain in foster care for the moment (until mom gets her shit together), I conduct core assessments of the family functioning/parenting capacity, I go a little bit of family counseling, individual counseling, I fill out more forms than there are trees in the world, I attend child protection conference, reviews of looked after (those in foster care) children, and I fill out adoption paperwork.
The kids on my caseload don't leave my desk unless the case is closed, they die, or they hit age 16 then they move on to Leaving & After Care Team. I could technically have my newborn for the next 16 years.
2. The roommate is ok...I have seen her twice since Sunday. She did ask me to bring her back some extra virgin olive oil. Do you know that it is so cheap to travel that literally she grocery shops in different countries. Mustard from France, Oil from Italy, Peas from Spain...
Sheesh...I going to get a man from Italy, my underwear from Germany, get high in Amsterdam, get my hair done in Africa....
LOL!
